The balance of projects by Sarah Constructions this year was of the highest quality. In addition, they are to be recognised for their time and cost performance, quality assurance systems, health and safety policies, construction methodologies and their ongoing contribution to the building and construction industry. Sarah’s are a very worthy recipient of the 2019 Commercial Builder of the Year Award.

Ken McLeavey – Hindmarsh Constructions

Ken celebrates over 50 years in the industry and is currently employed by Hindmarsh Construction. His current project, is the East End Apartments. Ken is a mentor to many and many of you here tonight would have had the privilege of working with Ken over the years. He is a worthy award recipient.

Brett Calladine – EJ Northway & Sons

Brett is a qualified Master Plumber who is part of a family-owned business, EJ Northway & Sons. He works in both the commercial and residential sectors and has recently upgraded his licence through training undertaken at Master Builders SA. He mentors up-and-coming apprentices and is always on hand to provide advice. A worthy winner and someone who will expand and further develop the company.

HiViZ Women Building SA – Outstanding Woman In Construction 2019

Anthea Greig, Urban Infill Group

Anthea has completed several project developments with various builders. Originally a nurse, she moved into mortgage broking prior to working on her own developments. She proactively sought out a mentor to help her and has worked on several developments both subdividing and medium-density builds with various contractors throughout the State. She teaches investments at the WEA institute and also runs a Property Investment Group. She has undertaken a few joint ventures with other females wanting to invest and is actively mentoring them through the process.

2019 Master Builders Apprentice of the Year

Zachary Franceschilli

Zachary is a fully qualified bricklayer and completed his apprenticeship early due to his outstanding work practices, skills and on the job performance. Within six months of completing his apprenticeship, he obtained his Contractors license and is now undertaking second apprenticeship as an Electrician. Throughout his apprenticeship he worked with three different Host Employers providing him with a broad knowledge base. Zack is keen to pursue a role as a Site Manager and in time will make an excellent Supervisor. Zack was a standout in this competitive field. Congratulations Zack.

Excellence in Commercial / Industrial Building up to $2m

Woolcock Construction

Woolcock Construction’s ability to provide an innovative and cost effective solution was a major factor in being awarded this project. The use of direct labour and the ability to achieve a high quality finish was noteworthy and was displayed in the dry stacked stone fireplace, the timber acoustic lining and burnished concrete floor. Although weather conditions proved to be challenging, the project was delivered on schedule and to the complete satisfaction of the client.

Sarah Constructions Pty Ltd

Sarah Constructions impressed the judges with the level of attention paid to all finishes. The external and internal brickwork displayed an extremely high level of workmanship setting the tone of the standard of finish. Working safely and efficiently in a very difficult and busy site, challenged the Sarah’s team to successfully develop staging of the works and outstanding work practices. The client was delighted with the end result.

Excellence in Commercial / Industrial Building $5m to $10m

Partek Construction & Interiors

The judges were extremely impressed with the standard of finish achieved. The level of planning, communication and collaboration with the client, consultants and subcontractors, was clearly evident in the completed project. Partek Construction and Interiors ability to innovate has delivered excellence in construction and real value for money. The client expressed high praise on all aspects of Parteks’ performance.

Excellence in Commercial / Industrial Building $10m to $20m

Hansen Yuncken

This extremely complex project scored very highly in all assessment criteria. Security was of high importance and required the establishment of a totally separate security gate, solely for personnel involved in the construction. The standard demanded by the client was second to none and as a result, the project is near perfect. It scored particularly highly in the standard of finishes and value for money. It was extremely difficult for the judges to find a defect in the workmanship.

Excellence in Commercial / Industrial Building $20m to $50m

Sarah Constructions

It’s rare that a retail development exceeds in this award because very tight commercial constraints and time frames often compromise standards of finish. Not so in this very refreshing retail concept. The selection of internal and external finishes were diverse and complex allowing little room for misalignment. Clearly the collaborative relationship between the client and Sarah Constructions was excellent with the outcome being exceptional.

Excellence in a Commercial / Industrial Building $50m to $100m


The Botanic High School Project was very challenging. It involved the extensive refurbishment of an existing building, with that of a new building. All to be handed over part way through construction. Lendlease overcame all site and building challenges, to construct a complex building that is especially ground breaking for a school. They were able to marry the new and old buildings, to produce what looks like a completely new build.

Excellence in a Commercial Fit-Out up to $5m

Mossop Construction+Interiors

The judges were impressed with the high level of satisfaction the client expressed and the positive and generous feedback from the Architect. To complete this project with its varied finishes, intricate design work, many curved surfaces, including glass in a complex layout, within the tight time frames, was a credit to Mossop Construction+Interiors.

Excellence in a Commercial Fit-Out over $5m

SHAPE Australia

The judges were impressed by SHAPE Australia’s resolution to difficulties on site, including limited access. The central staircase was of an exceptionally high standard, including the methodology for installing the staircase, given only small lifts. The project was of the highest level and a credit to SHAPE Australia.

Excellence in a Commercial Refurbishment / Redevelopment up to $5m

Chappell Builders

The Arndale Mall Refurbishment by Chappell Builders was outstanding. A young and very passionate project manager took over the project half way through and received a commendation from the client. Chappell’s value management process was commendable and the finishes on the project were exceptional.

Excellence in a Commercial Refurbishment / Redevelopment over $5m

Schiavello Construction (SA)

The innovation of set out and in-situ transfer beams by Schiavello was brilliant in this project. The Adelaide Festival Centre needed to remain open during the refurbishment and did so regardless of the problems being experienced on the site.

Complex finishes with 3-D tiles and bronze trim to doors and frames are a highlight. A very complex refurb with tight time frames and a passionate project manager all contributed to Schiavello being a worthy winner of this award.

Excellence in Civil / Engineering Construction


Kennett’s ability and commitment to finding a solution that delivered a world class velodrome surface, involved spending considerable time investigating and testing options that were not originally specified in their contract. The judges were extremely impressed with the accuracy and finish achieved in the time frame allowed.

The Carmelite Retirement Village was a challenging project as it set a new standard for retirement and aged care living. A multi storey building with cutting edge requirements. Excellence in Structure / Envelope Commercial

HSR (Aust) Group

The HSR Group overcame significant onsite difficulties and were required to complete works in 2 separate stages, whilst leaving the building operable to students. HSR had minimal opportunity to complete this major conservation project in record time. The end result demonstrates superior detail, in a difficult working environment. Those involved showed exceptional pride in their workmanship.

Excellence in Services Commercial

Tyrone Electrical Services

Tyrone Electrical faced significant site challenges associated with this very busy foot traffic area within Adelaide Airport. They implemented innovative design methods throughout the project to ensure uninterrupted pedestrian flow by way of continually moving works.

Exclusion zones and signage along the 180 meter thoroughfare provided a safe work environment for construction workers and the public. Works were required to be completed between 11pm and 4am over the course of the project. The project outcomes are very impressive.

Excellence in Interior / Finishes Commercial

Carbine Industries

Carbine Industries provided ceilings and partitions including feature ceiling linings, Euro Panel ceilings, Atkar ceilings, hand made Tasmanian Oak timber feature ceilings and glass feature lift lobby ceilings. Their workmanship was outstanding and their designs and application to this site is a credit to them and the industry. They are worthy recipients of this award.
