And it is important to remember that safe excavation is not just about lodging a DBYD enquiry and getting the plans. To minimise the risk of damage, injury or potential loss of life, it is recommended as best practice to follow the 5Ps of Safe Excavation.
Plan your job. Use the Dial Before You Dig service at least one day before your job is due to begin to ensure you have the correct information you need to carry out a safe project.
Use a DBYD Certified Locator. Communicate with asset owners if you need assistance with anything. Look for clues for underground infrastructure onsite.
Potholing is physically sighting the asset by hand digging or hydro vacuum extraction.
Protecting and supporting the exposed infrastructure is the responsibility of the excavator. Always erect safety barriers in areas of risk to protect underground networks. Enforce exclusion zones.
