Hi, I’m Kristina – HiViZ Committee Member

Hello! I’m Kristina, and I’ve had the pleasure of being on the HiViz Committee since late 2022. I’m currently Projects & Design Manager for Thorne Constructions, working on a range of residential and commercial projects from conception through to handover. I found a passion for the built environment when I was overseas, travelling through Europe and Dubai, seeing the contrast of the thousand-year-old buildings in Italy and walkable streets, to the mile-high skyscrapers and endless highways of Dubai. I was fascinated by the similarities and differences between the buildings that make up a city and in turn how it feels to be there.
The moment that turned the fascination into action happened in Dubai. I still remember it vividly; I was standing on the 125th floor of the Burj Khalifa, in absolute awe. There was a tour showcasing the project team and all the design and engineering that went into the building, and it made me realise that I could actually be one of those people one day. Throughout university I really came to appreciate how the spaces around us shape the way we think and live. Much of what we do and how we identify ourselves as communities are reflective of the buildings around us; well-scaled spaces, a walkable city or an open plan home can all affect how we live our day to day lives. This passion still drives me today – even as I’ve moved slightly away from design and more into project delivery. My approach centres around bridging the gap between architect-builder-client, prioritising the functional delivery of the building whilst maintaining architectural intent, ultimately creating a lasting space for the end user.

I got my foot in the door of the construction industry during university, working part time for a pool builder, before starting as a Graduate of Architecture at Thorne Constructions in 2019, after finishing my degree. I have loved being involved in a project from design development all the way through to handover, seeing ideas come to life in front of my every eyes. In this industry, the result of our work is so tangible, we create something from nothing, literally. It’s awesome. Nearly seven years later, I’ve been lucky enough to be involved in a range of projects that I didn’t think I would be doing for another decade. That’s something I really love about our industry – it is abundant with opportunity, and if you put in the work, you get rewarded. There is so much growth in our sector which enables continuous personal and professional development.

To me, being part of the Committee means the chance for advocacy, visibility and mentorship. Over the last few years, I have developed an appreciation for the network that HiViz provides, finding comfort in relating to women facing similar experiences to me in the industry, both positive and negative. Programs like Born to Build have been fantastic in promoting the industry; the career handbook is a resource I wish I could’ve accessed in high school. As the percentage of the workforce that identifies as female increases, so does the need for conversations around retention of women in the construction industry.

I’m looking forward meeting other women in the field at our upcoming networking events and contributing to a collaborative industry that equally supports men and women to succeed.
