Congratulations Laura Stevenson
Apprentice of the Month – May 2021
Trade: Carpentry & Joinery
Stage of apprenticeship: First year
Commencement date: February 2021
Expected completion date: February 2025
Why did you become an apprentice?
I knew throughout my very diverse working history that I had thrived in positions that kept me active and busy. The idea of a trade was something that had all these things plus had an element of learning an actual skill which meant I wouldn’t get bored of it so quickly.
I was undecided between carpentry and welding for a while but while I was still in recovery I would walk a lot and see all the beautiful old buildings and structures that Adelaide had to offer, something I’d always been fascinated but had now started to see in a different light. I did a cert 2 and fell in love with the art of woodworking and the rest is history!
What do you enjoy most about your apprenticeship?
I love the diverse range of skills and jobs you get as a carpentry apprentice. Actually having to use your brain as well as your body keeps things interesting and helps me focus. It’s great being able to see a project go from nothing to something and being a part of it. I really enjoy learning about how what we’re doing affects the outcome of the structure. I enjoy using the tools and learning the best ways to do so, how the slightest tweak in how you’re holding something can change everything. I enjoy working out solutions to problems and even though I still have a lot to learn it’s great to hear when the tradespeople do their back and forth and being able to pick up what they’re talking about.
I really enjoy all of it to be honest and I’m so grateful everyday to be able to do it.
Would you recommend Master Builders SA apprenticeships to others and why?
Absolutely! I can’t thank you enough Sam and everybody there for the effort and support you put into finding me work that I actually wanted rather then just a job. You’ve all been incredibly generous and patient with me (sending these answers in many weeks late) and I’m really grateful to be part of master builders. I would 100% recommend you and apprenticeships to anyone I felt would benefit from it.
