Some are calling Crystalline Silica, “Asbestos 2.0” due to the similarities in the way it affects your respiratory system. It’s for this reason the State Government mandated new regulations late last year for people who have worked with or been exposed to crystalline silica substances (CSS) within the last five years.
Materials containing silica include both natural and manufactured materials and products such as soil and sand, clay, stone products, concrete, bricks, mortar, grout, tiles, pavers, fibre cement, glass, and asphalt, amongst others.
All workers in the building and construction industries who work with materials that contain silica, or who are impacted by airborne dust on a worksite, are required to attend a training course.
SafeWork SA recently contacted Master Builders SA to develop one of the first Regulator Approved silica training courses. Our course is available to members and non-members and covers the following topics;
- Outlining the health risks involved with silica exposure
- How to identify risks
- PPE requirements and how to use PPE effectively
- Ongoing controls and risk management
- How to interpret data-sheets
The course is a unique face-to-face or virtual practical course with the best WHS trainer in the business, Chris Giniver.
“It is the most accessible in the State and already since its inception in March, the feedback has been excellent.
“We teach everything from how to identify the risks of silica exposure, how to manage the risks, which PPE to wear and the tools needed to stay safe and stay compliant,” Mr Giniver said.
MBA SA’s Head of Training, Chris Lipapis says without this mandated training Safework SA can impose fines, put sites on notice and initiate court proceedings to anyone doing the wrong thing.
“…That’s why Master Builders SA has taken this development seriously, as a known and trusted training brand in the building and construction industry.
“Our Crystalline Silica Safety & Compliance Training will not only ensure broad access to all workers, it will also break down financial barriers, as CITB has come on board and provided subsidy assistance.”
With no industry being hit harder than the building and construction industry, Master Builders SA believes this is the best chance for people to be educated and empowered to deal with this dangerous substance.
We encourage you to register for training today.
