To prepare you for your Licence interview with Consumer Business & Services interview for your supervisors registration for Residential Building, Class 1 & 10 and Commercial Building Class 2-9.

It is recommended you look at the following;

Understanding overall legislation hierarchy

  • The different Acts & Regulations as they apply to construction (name at least 3 or 4)
  • Minimum standard to which building must be undertaken in Australia
  • Other considerations

For domestic construction:

  • Insurance requirements
  • Maximum deposit permitted (different scenarios)
  • Paperwork requirements at completion of job / notifications and inspections
  • Understanding of different plans, detail drawings and contract documentation
  • What type of work requires approval / where the approval is lodged / authorities
  • Health and safety considerations (WHS, documents on site, authority, high risk construction, notifiable incidents)
  • Environmental considerations (authority, what types of things need to be considered, methods to prevent environmental harm)

For Class 1 and 10 (including renovations, extensions, additions and alterations) the following elements of the NCC/Standards are generally tested by Consumer and Business Services in the formal interview:

  • Site preparation and understanding of slab / footings requirements on plans (soil classification, reinforcement, set downs, where extra slab thickening & reinforcing may be needed);
  • Understanding of Levels and site setout (relating to datum points etc.);
  • Specific requirements around boundary construction (excavations/fill close to/on boundaries);
  • Energy efficiency requirements, assessment pathways and minimum rating and what is needed to be considered for construction;
  • Construction bushfire prone environments (different bushfire attack levels and what this means in terms of exposure and construction);
  • General fire rating requirements and separation distances (fire source features, FRLs);
  • Rainwater tanks as they relate to buildings (different requirements in different situations, retention v detention);
  • Brickwork (edge rebate requirements, brick overhang tolerance, brick ties, articulation/control joint requirements, weep holes, lintels, damp courses);
  • Prevention of water entry to a building (e.g. Damp courses & Paving (set downs, gradients));
  • Termite protection;
  • Wet Areas (which standards apply, defining waterproof/water resistant, enclosed v unenclosed showers, floor falls, floor waste requirements, water stops, flashing and bond breaking);
  • Roof plumbing requirements (gutter types/falls, downpipe spacing, special requirements for box gutters);
  • Carpentry / timber framing code (framing members, wind speed environments, load distribution, tie downs, bracing, identifying truss types);
  • Board fixing requirements (different fixings / spacings, installation requirements); &
  • Swimming pool safety requirements
